Permeable Reactive Barriers

Permeable Reactive Barriers / Funnel & Gate Systems

A One-Pass Trencher can install Permeable Reactive Barriers for the passive remediation of soil and groundwater.

DeWind One-Pass Technology provides an innovative and cost-effective solution for installing Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) and Funnel & Gate Systems, which are designed to operate under the water table – typically in highly fluid soils. DeWind’s trenching method reduces the challenges and high costs of traditional excavation techniques, making it the ideal choice for contaminated site remediation and groundwater management.

What DeWind Offers

DeWind specializes in installing PRBs and Funnel & Gate Systems using advanced One-Pass Trenching Technology. This system allows for the installation of reactive media like Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), Zeolite, Activated Alumina, Activated Carbon, Bio-Mulch, and other remediation materials into walls up to 72 inches wide and up to 50 feet deep (deeper with benching).

These barriers serve as passive systems for soil and groundwater remediation, effectively treating contaminants while requiring little ongoing maintenance.

DeWind offers volumetric mixing of aggregate and various reactive media. Volumetric mixing ensures that the proper proportions of reactive media are mixed in a continuous batching process, and on-the-fly mix adjustments can be made as dictated by design or by changing ground conditions.

How DeWind Does It

DeWind’s One-Pass method revolutionizes how reactive barriers are constructed by streamlining the installation process:

    • Precise Trenching and Backfilling
The One-Pass Trenching process cuts a precise trench under the water table while simultaneously backfilling it with reactive materials through a custom-made delivery box. This delivery box extends to the bottom of the trench, ensuring accurate placement and consistent distribution of materials. A conveyor system / support equipment feed the delivery box continuously, allowing for smooth, uninterrupted operation.
    • Efficiency and Safety
DeWind’s method avoids the need for dewatering, open excavations, or shoring, which are common in traditional methods. By bypassing these steps, the One-Pass system minimizes site disruption, mitigates safety risks, and reduces the need to manage and dispose of contaminated spoils.
    • Customizable Trench Dimensions and Speed
Trench depths can reach up to 50 feet, with widths ranging from 18 inches to 72 inches. The installation process achieves speeds of 200–400 linear feet per day, ensuring that even large-scale projects are completed in a timely fashion. For deeper installations, benching techniques can be applied.
    • Innovative Technology
DeWind’s trenchers are equipped with advanced features to maintain precision and quality during the installation process. Things like custom delivery systems, synchronized controls, and cutting-edge techniques that adapt to varying soil conditions – just to name a few.
  • Volumetric Mixing: Sand and/or gravel are blended with reactive media (e.g., ZVI) at Engineer-specified proportions. Numerous quality control checks are performed during calibration and production including density testing, magnetic separation (where applicable), mechanical separation (where applicable), and ongoing mathematical calculations of backfill components to ensure compliance with Specifications.

Why DeWind Excels

DeWind’s One-Pass Technology is a game-changer for the construction of reactive barrier walls and Funnel & Gate Systems. Key advantages include:

  • No Open Excavations: Avoids the risks associated with dangerous open trenches and reduces on-site safety hazards.
  • No Dewatering: Operates efficiently under the water table without the need for pumping, treating, or transporting contaminated water.
  • Cost-Effective: Eliminates the expenses associated with shoring, dewatering systems, and spoil disposal, making projects more affordable.
  • Environmentally Friendly: The ability to install PRBs and remediation systems without generating contaminated spoils ensures a cleaner overall process.

DeWind’s One-Pass Trenching offers a reliable and proven solution. With trenching depths of up to 50 feet, widths as wide as 72 inches, and installation speeds of 200–400 linear feet per day, DeWind delivers superior efficiency and quality. Projects that were once cost-prohibitive because of traditional excavation challenges can now be performed with confidence – ensuring better environmental outcomes and safer work environments.
